Freedom, Foundations, and the Work Worth Doing

Every year on the Fourth of July, before the cookouts, fireworks, or parades begin, I take time to read the Declaration of Independence. It’s a tradition I began while serving in the military, a quiet moment of reflection and reverence for the document that launched a bold experiment in freedom. Through all the years since, that tradition has stayed with me.
There’s one line in particular that always resonates:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal… that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Those words weren’t just poetry. They were a declaration of purpose. A blueprint for building something that had never been built before. And it strikes me that in many ways, that spirit still lives on in the work we do today.
When we take on a project whether it’s senior housing, a multifamily development, or a preconstruction challenge, we’re not just managing schedules and budgets. We’re helping to build places that reflect our shared values: safety, dignity, opportunity, and community. The structures we create today shape the freedoms others will enjoy tomorrow.
Like our founders, we face uncertainty, complexity, and pressure. But also like them, we embrace vision, strategy, and determination. That’s what leadership looks like, not just in government, but in business, in planning commissions, and in the way we show up for our communities.
So this Independence Day, as we honor the courage of those who came before us, I also want to recognize the builders, the doers, and the leaders who carry that spirit forward one project, one plan, and one purposeful step at a time.
